Position statement and/or session proposals should not exceed two pages in length. For both position statements and session proposals, a thorough discussion of the roles of international collaboration and experimentation-based research is an essential part of the submission. Position statements should include at least the following information: author(s), participant(s) who will attend GEFI 2019, description of research (clearly distinguishing among past, ongoing, and planned efforts), history and plans for international collaboration. Session proposals should include at least the following information: summary of research trend; candidate session chairs (two chairs from different continents – please indicate whether named individuals have agreed to serve); potential session participants; summary of recent progress and anticipated benefits of international collaboration in the proposed area.

Please email submissions to the chairs at agosain@coe.neu.edu and seskar@winlab.rutgers.edu and indicate clearly whether your submission is a position statement or a session proposal.

The participating research communities wish to perform collaborative research, on the basis of equality and reciprocity, in areas of mutual interest, which may be characterized as:

a. Investigations of the research infrastructures suitable for hosting at-scale experimentation in future internet architectures, services, and applications, and use of such infrastructures for experimental research.

b. We envision that our collaboration will encompass joint specification of system interfaces, development of interoperable systems, adoption of each other’s tools, experimental linkages of our testbeds, and experimentation that spans our infrastructures.

c. We further envision that students and young professors from participating nations will visit each other and collaborate deeply in these activities, in hopes of sparking friendships and life-long research collaborations between the communities.
Topics of interest for GEFI 2019 include, but are not limited to:
  •  Research platforms for advanced wireless research (5G and beyond)
  •  Experiment repeatability and reproducibility
  •  Testbed extensibility and interconnectivity (e.g., novel resources beyond standard radio, computation, networking, and storage)
  •  Federation of experimentation facilities (e.g., identity, control, and data plane federation; programmability of diverse and unique resource types)
  •  Integration of Software Defined Radio (SDR) and Software Defined Networking (SDN)
  •  Cloud Computing Systems Research
  •  Experimenter support tools
  •  APIs for experimenters
  •  Support for research in heterogeneous cloud applications (e.g., combinations of edge, IoT, enterprise, and data center resources)
  •  Software defined exchanges (SDX)
  •  Software defined infrastructure (SDI)
  •  Intelligent radio networks
  •  Open data repositories for experimentation

The Global Experimentation for Future Internet (GEFI) community connects researchers and research sponsors in the EU, US, Japan, Korea, and Brazil to advance international collaboration for experimental research in future networks. GEFI 2019 is the third workshop in the GEFI series, which expands on several previous bilateral and regional international collaborations. Information on GEFI 2018 is available from the workshop web page.
Potential participants in GEFI 2019 are invited to submit position statements and proposed session topics. Position statements should describe recent, current, and/or planned research in areas of interest. Proposed session topics should identify important challenges in research where international collaboration can significantly increase scope, pace, and impact. Participants will be selected based both on the content of submissions and on their ability to participate in discussion and planning of current and future international collaborative efforts to advance the GEFI mission. Past events in the GEFI and predecessor series have included a mixture of junior and more senior researchers.
The format of GEFI 2019 is designed to encourage both information dissemination and the cultivation of new international collaborations. Participants are expected to attend the entire 1.5-day workshop, which will be divided into approximately four technical sessions. Each session is conducted in plenary format, with all interested participants given the opportunity to deliver brief presentations and substantial time reserved for group discussion.
